Courses and Workshops in Multisensory Strategies for teaching mathematics are available from ASDEC, a nationally certified teacher training facility in Rockville, MD. The courses and workshops are based on current research in mathematics, the focal points from the NCTM and approaches advocated by the National Math Panel.
Multisensory strategies are based on the Orton-Gillingham approach to education developed for students with dyslexia and related learning disabilities but they are appropriate for all students. The MSM approach is hands-on and uses manipulatives to teach math concepts before continuing to a representational and abstract level of instruction.
Multisensory Math I A 30 graduate level course in using multisensory strategies to teach foundation skills. This course focuses on developing the CRA approach, linking research to practice and addressing what is now believed to be the core deficit in math disability: numeracy and quantity representation. Participants practice using manipulatives to teach numeracy, quantity relationships, place value, number facts, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as fraction concepts and operations. Class demonstrations often involve applications at higher levels of math including algebra. In this way, participants may see that the principles of O-G Math instruction apply in all levels of education. Participants also compile a reference manual which includes teacher reproducible masters as well as research, theory and reference materials regarding learning disabilities and inclusion class techniques.
The current ASDEC Summer Intensive begins June 27, 2011 and runs for five days, 9:00 am -4:00pm. See the ASDEC website for details: www.asdec.org
Multisensory Math II A 30 graduate level course which expands on concepts, theory and practices developed in MSM I. I begins with explorations of fraction applications and continues addressing multisensory strategies for teaching higher level math including selected topics in Algebra I and Algebra II.
The current ASDEC Course begins March 9, 2011 and continues for five Saturdays days, 9-4.
Presentations: LDA National Conference, Feb. 2011 ALTA Conference, Dallas TX April 2011 NCTM, Atlantic City Regional Conference Oct. 2011 IDA National Conference, Oct. 2011 Multisensory Math One Day Overview
This full day workshop offers an overview of the Multisensory Math approach, research and rationale. Participants use hands on manipulatives to practice teaching a variety of concepts. It addresses all the components of the MSM I course but very briefly. It does give participants ideas, methodology and language which can be immediately put into use. Participants also create their own model manipulatives using inexpensive materials. Six hours of actual instruction with a lunch break.

Multisensory Math Two Day Overview
This workshop encompasses two full days of teacher training and is highly effective in giving participants hands-on practice with manipulatives. Participants participate in a "make-it/ take-it" workshop where they create and then practice with manipulatives. It gives participants more practice with the language, the approach and the methodology. Many schools and teachers feel this workshop jump starts a new approach to teaching math and gives teachers a fresh way of looking at motivating students and helping them succeed. Two full six hour days of instruction with additional time for lunch.
Current Offerings Include: July 14 & 15, 2011 at Comenius School of Creative Leadership Fort Mill, SC
